Staging Children’s Rooms for Living

Setting up kids rooms for living means different things to different people. Most parents want their children to learn organizational skills and pick up their own rooms from early ages, so designing the room for easy organization is important. Some prefer a decorator look with less organizational matter, and both work well, depending on parental lifestyles.
Since organizational skills are imperative in my household, I’ll opt for the neat nick room and decorate around that style. The most important pieces come first.
- Bed
- Desk
- Dresser
- Chair
- Shelves
Once those are in place, consider the arrangement as “areas of the room” and organize each area for optimal space and use of the space available. Dressing area would be closet and dresser. You’ll need to add a mirror and any specific dressing aids the child will need to this space. If the closet is large enough, confining all clothing storage to inside the closet is a boost to the use of space in the room, because that expands wall space for other details of the child’s room.
Forming an L in a corner with the desk and shelves makes the best use of both time and space for studying. Not only is your space efficient to use, but it’s efficient when you’re studying too. All your books and supplies are readily available within an arms reach of your chair. Can’t beat that! It works well and it’s a great looking area when people come by to see you.
So, now we’re ready for the bed.
Put the bed on the largest wall, out from the wall for ease of making the bed. I always suggest the head of the bed in the center of the wall and adjust around that, when I can’t see the room. Otherwise, I’ve found that offsetting the bed just enough to make allowances for other furniture is a good option.
Baskets, buckets, tins and other organizers work particularly well to either grow with the child or be used elsewhere in the home as children outgrow the need for clutter-storage. Effective storage usually comes in a variety of styles and colors for children, though I’ve found the best appearances come from a uniform/same color look.
While small children relate to multi-colored baskets, older children prefer something less “pre-school” for their organization.
